Troubleshooting

Alipay payment failed with an international card?

A failed payment does not always mean your card is unusable. For travelers, the fastest route is to check whether the first attempt is still pending, then rule out your bank, account verification, and the payment scenario one by one.

Before you retry: check whether money moved

Open Alipay's payment history and your bank's transaction list. If the payment is pending, successful, or unclear, do not submit the same payment again. Keep the amount, time, merchant name, and any error message; these are what your bank or Alipay support will need to investigate a disputed or duplicate payment.

Use this troubleshooting order

1. Check the card and your bank

A bank can block an unfamiliar overseas or online transaction. Confirm that your card is active, has sufficient available funds or credit, and is allowed to make the type of international payment you are attempting. If the error mentions a decline or the card, contact the card issuer first.

2. Finish account verification

Complete any identity checks shown in the app. Use a clear, current passport image and make sure the personal details you enter match your documents and cardholder details as closely as possible.

3. Test the payment scenario

A working card setup does not guarantee every QR payment will behave the same way. Merchant and personal QR codes can be handled differently. For personal-code issues, read the QR troubleshooting guide.

4. Rule out an app or connection issue

Update the app, use a stable connection, and try again only after you have confirmed the earlier attempt did not complete. If scanning fails, try a different well-lit QR code rather than repeatedly scanning the same one.

The most useful pre-trip test

Do not wait until you are in a taxi queue or at a restaurant counter. Test a small payment before your trip. A successful test gives you a better signal than simply seeing a card listed in the app, while a failure gives you time to speak with your bank or add a backup card.

Keep a backup, and protect your details

  • Add a second card before travel when possible.
  • Set up WeChat Pay as a separate backup.
  • Keep some cash or another accepted payment option for urgent situations.
  • Never send a card number, CVV, one-time code, or passport image to an unofficial chat account claiming to offer support.
