- Ask your bank to enable overseas transactions (and reduce fraud blocks for small amounts).
- Confirm with a real WeChat Pay test payment by scanning a QR code.
How to confirm it works
The best “can I pay in China?” signal is seeing a successful QR payment result inside the app. Use a small payment so your bank’s risk controls don’t trigger as easily.
If payment fails
- Try a different card (debit often behaves differently than credit).
- Double-check in-app verification status (passport/identity where applicable).
- Call your bank and whitelist small overseas transactions.
- Keep a backup: set up Alipay too.
