The short answer
A current Beijing municipal government guide says foreign travelers can link overseas bank cards to Alipay and use mobile payments in scenarios such as dining, transportation, hotels, and supermarkets. It lists Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and Discover for Alipay. Card support is not a promise that every issuer, merchant, or payment flow will approve every transaction, so prepare a backup and test before your trip.
What to prepare
An international phone number
Register with a number that can receive verification messages. Keep access to that number while traveling because a new login or security check may require a code.
A valid passport
Alipay may request identity verification. Have your passport ready and follow the exact in-app instructions; do not upload it to an unofficial support account.
A supported overseas card
The card must be active and allowed by the issuer for the transaction. The card network list is a starting point, not a guarantee: issuer rules, card type, merchant, and account status still matter.
A backup payment option
Keep a second card, cash, or WeChat Pay ready. One wallet working does not guarantee that every merchant or QR payment scenario will work.
How to get started
- Download the official Alipay app and register with your phone number.
- Add an overseas card by following the in-app prompts. For detailed steps, use the international card setup guide.
- Complete passport or other identity checks if Alipay requests them.
- Test the actual payment path with a small real transaction before you travel.
- Keep your second payment option available until you have seen a successful result.
What foreigners can usually use Alipay for
The government guide describes everyday payment scenarios including restaurants, transportation, hotels, supermarkets, QR-code payments, mini-programs, and some password-free deductions. Availability depends on the merchant and the payment page shown in the app.
Why it can still fail
- Your bank declines an unfamiliar overseas or online transaction.
- Identity verification is incomplete or the account has a restriction.
- The merchant or QR-code payment flow does not accept that international card.
- The transaction reaches a card, account, or merchant limit.
- The app, connection, or payment status has not finished updating.
Do this before your flight
Seeing a saved card in Alipay is not the same as completing a payment. Run a small real test before you leave. If it succeeds, you have checked the full payment path. If it fails, you still have time to call your bank, finish verification, add another card, or set up WeChat Pay.
