Do not call every card entry a refund problem
First identify the status in three places: the Alipay or WeChat Pay history, the merchant's order record, and the card issuer's record. A wallet message, merchant receipt, and bank entry can update at different times.
| What you see | Check next | Do not do this yet |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet says failed or closed; bank says pending | Check whether the merchant created an order and whether the issuer labels the card entry as pending authorization. | Do not assume the hold has disappeared or immediately pay again. |
| Wallet says completed; merchant says no payment | Show the merchant the payment status and ask them to check the order, terminal, or payment account before creating another payment. | Do not use another account or send the same amount repeatedly. |
| Merchant says refunded; foreign card has not been credited | Ask for the refund reference and compare it with the original payment and card statement. Ask the issuer to trace it to the original card. | Do not treat a verbal promise as confirmation that a formal refund was submitted. |
When the wallet, merchant, and bank records disagree
- Save the facts first: capture the amount, currency, merchant, local date and time, wallet transaction ID, order number, and bank status.
- Ask the merchant a narrow question: whether an order exists, whether the payment was received, and whether a refund was formally submitted. Ask for a receipt or refund reference if one exists.
- Check the original card: a foreign-card refund normally needs to be traced against the original payment, not a different card or a wallet balance you added later.
- Escalate the right record: use official Alipay or WeChat support for the wallet transaction, and contact the card issuer when a pending authorization, completed charge, or missing refund appears on its statement.
- Ask about the final route: if the merchant cannot confirm a formal refund and the issuer cannot locate it, ask the issuer which card-network refund-tracing or dispute process applies. Do not treat a pending authorization as a completed chargeback case unless the issuer tells you to.
If you have already left China
Leaving China does not turn a pending authorization into a formal refund, and it does not make a wallet balance follow the same rules as a card refund. Keep access to the original card account for refund tracing when safe, preserve access to the app and registered phone number, and save your records. If the card is lost, replaced, or compromised, follow your issuer's security instructions first. For a traveler card, TourCard, or stored balance, read the current in-app refund or withdrawal terms for that exact product rather than assuming the merchant-refund process applies.
Community experience: use it to ask better questions
One recent r/travelchina discussion describes a traveler looking for a WeChat Pay refund or dispute after a merchant problem. Replies mention opening the payment record, contacting the merchant, and looking for the app's refund or dispute route, but the thread is incomplete and does not establish WeChat policy. Use it as a prompt for questions, not as proof of a refund outcome or timeline.

Frequently asked questions
My card shows a charge but Alipay or WeChat Pay says the payment failed. Was I charged?
Not necessarily. The card issuer may be showing a pending authorization rather than a completed charge. Check the wallet history, ask the merchant whether an order or payment exists, and check whether your bank labels the entry pending, completed, reversed, or refunded before paying again.
What is the difference between a pending authorization and a refund?
A pending authorization is a temporary issuer hold for an attempted payment. A refund is a separate action after a completed payment, normally initiated by the merchant or payment flow. They can appear differently in your bank record and do not follow the same process.
The merchant says they refunded me, but the money is not on my foreign card. What should I ask for?
Ask for the original order amount, payment time, original payment channel, refund amount, and any refund receipt or reference. Then compare these details with the wallet history and ask your card issuer to trace the refund to the original card.
Should I pay again when the wallet and merchant records do not match?
No. First confirm whether the merchant has an order and whether the wallet and issuer show a pending or completed transaction. Repeating an unclear payment can create a duplicate charge or a harder dispute.
What if I leave China before a refund or card hold is resolved?
Keep access to the original card account for refund tracing when it is safe to do so, retain access to the payment app and registered number, and save your records before leaving. If the card is lost, replaced, or compromised, follow your issuer's security instructions first and tell it about the pending refund. Refunds to a foreign card and unused wallet or traveler-card balances can follow different account-specific rules, so use the official in-app support path for the product involved.
What evidence should I save for support?
Save screenshots of wallet history and bank status, the merchant name, amount and currency, local date and time, order or receipt number, refund reference if available, and any error message. Do not send your password, one-time code, CVV, or passport image to a merchant helper or an unofficial service.
