First, identify what is not working
If WeChat cannot scan the QR code
- Ask the merchant for a fresh code. A printed code may be damaged, too small, covered by glare, or no longer active.
- Move the phone back until the full square is visible, clean the camera lens, and avoid reflections on the screen.
- Allow WeChat to use the camera in your phone settings, then close and reopen the app.
- Use WeChat Scan from the app, rather than a camera shortcut that opens a different payment or browser flow.
- Try mobile data or a stable Wi-Fi connection. A scan can appear to work even when the payment page cannot reach the service.
If the code scans but payment fails
Check the payment type
International cards are intended for supported everyday merchant purchases. A code that starts a personal transfer, red packet, or another unsupported feature may not accept an overseas card. Ask for the merchant payment QR instead.
Check the card and account
Confirm the card is active, has available funds, and allows overseas or online transactions. Complete any passport or real-name check shown in WeChat. For card, identity, or limit errors, follow the detailed payment-failed guide.
Merchant QR code vs your payment code
These are not interchangeable. When you scan a merchant's code, the merchant payment page normally asks you to enter or confirm the amount. Your own payment code is shown for a merchant to scan. Personal QR codes can start a transfer or another flow that has different card rules. If an international card is rejected, ask the merchant which QR option accepts card payments instead of repeatedly scanning a personal code.
If payment is loading, pending, or unclear
- Wait briefly, then check WeChat Pay transaction history.
- Check your bank app for an authorization or pending charge.
- Ask the merchant to confirm whether the order was received.
- Do not scan the same code again until you know the first attempt was declined or cancelled.
If money was held but the order failed, keep the amount, time, merchant, and transaction status for the bank or WeChat support. A pending authorization may disappear or be reversed according to the issuer's process.
International-card limits to keep in mind
WeChat's current Help Center guide lists a 6,500 RMB single-transaction limit, a 50,000 RMB monthly cumulative limit, and a 65,000 RMB yearly cumulative limit for international-card payments. It also lists no fee under 200 RMB and a 3% fee above 200 RMB. Policies can change, so the fee and limit shown in your current payment page take priority.
Test the exact payment path before your trip
Saving a card does not prove that QR payment will complete. Use a small real transaction to test the account, card, QR flow, and bank approval together. If it fails, you still have time to finish verification, call your bank, add another card, or set up Alipay as a backup.
